CBP: Ex-Disney worker arrested at NY border, accused of bomb threat against park

A Canadian citizen was arrested at the U.S.-Canada border who had an outstanding felony warrant out of Florida relating to a bomb threat at Walt Disney World, said authorities.

Matthew Carney, 22, was driving alone through the Ogdenseburg Port of Entry between New York and Ontario, said U.S. Customs and Border Protection in a statement.

During the inspection, it was discovered he had an active NCIC warrant issued by the Orange County Sheriff’s Office from 2019 over threats he made while interning at Walt Disney World during college.

According to the incident report, Carney, then 19, allegedly told a female security guard outside the park’s Magic Kingdom that “I have a bomb” and that “I am going to blow up the castle.”

The security guard immediately brought Carney to her manager where he repeated his claims about having an explosive and wanting to “blow up the castle,” said the report.

The manager noted that Carney “had a straight face, was not laughing and appeared to be serious,” but a search by an Orange County sheriff’s deputy found no explosives.

“This incident highlights the continued work that CBP does alongside our many law enforcement partners, playing a vital role in maintaining the safety of our communities,” Ogdensburg Port Director Thomas Trimboli said in the CBP statement.

However, charges were not officially filed by the State Attorney’s Office for more than a year after the incident – August 2020.

Carney’s lawyer filed a motion for her client to be released on his own recognizance, according to Fox 35 Orlando.

In the motion, the lawyer said Carney was not arrested during the investigation. She also claims that Carney “had no knowledge” of an outstanding warrant, had no knowledge of the delayed filing and has since graduated from college.

Carney is being held without bail at St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility awaiting extradition, said the Miami Herald on Tuesday.
