The office of Florida Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis say now hold a lead over Democrats in the state's voter rolls of over 100,000.
The governor's office announced that there are presently 5,145,878 Republicans and 5,044,802 Democrats registered in Florida, giving Republicans an edge of 101,076 total voters, according to the Epoch Times.
There were 5,135,377 Republicans and 5,045,849 Democrats registered to vote in the Sunshine State on Feb. 28, 2022, according to the Florida Department of State, indicating a Republican advantage of 89,528.
Moreover, Democrats have lost voters in blue Miami-Dade County. The data from the governor's office revealed the county had lost 9,000 Democratic voters over a three month period.
When DeSantis took office in November of 2021, Democrats had a voter registration edge exceeding 260,000. That edge has, however, evaporated under his leadership. The Epoch Times noted Florida's popularity as a retirement destination and highlighted the state's absence of income, estate, and inheritance taxes as partial drivers for the arrival of more Republican voters.
Florida has been a pivotal swing state in recent elections, voting narrowly for Donald Trump in 2016 and 2020, but breaking for Barack Obama in 2008 and 2012. The state earned notoriety during the 2000 election cycle for its contested recount efforts which ultimately resulted in a Supreme Court case and George W. Bush's election to the presidency.
