Standoff in South Phoenix leaves 9 officers and one woman injured, suspect dead

Nine police officers were hurt, one woman was critically injured, and a suspect died after an hours-long standoff in a residential area of South Phoenix on Friday.

Police responded to a call reporting a woman being shot near 54th Avenue and Elwood at around 2:00 a.m. When a police officer arrived at the scene, a male suspect let him into the house and shot him multiple times.

"He was actually invited by the suspect," said Sgt. Andy Williams. "As he approached the doorway, the suspect ambushed him with a gun and shot him several times."

The wounded police officer was able to escape. Police back up surrounded the house as the suspect barricaded himself inside.  

During the standoff, a man carrying a baby came out of the house. He placed the baby on the ground and walked towards the police with his hands up in the air showing he was not a threat.

As officers moved to pick up the baby, the suspect opened fire again, injuring four other officers. Four other officers were hurt by shrapnel or ricochets.

After several hours, police were able to get inside the house. However, they found the suspect dead and a woman with critical injuries.
