Two American airlines have been ranked as some of the worst airlines in the world behind only one other international carrier, according to a new study.
While Allegiant and Spirit airlines have been battling out for the Worst Airline in America, they have also made it to the list of Worst Airline in the World, right after Indonesia’s Lion Air.
The study conducted by the Bounce luggage-storage app used data from the Official Airline Guide (OAG), Skytrax, FlightsFrom, the U.S. Office of Aviation Consumer Protection, and the individual airlines to rank the airlines.
On-time arrivals, cancellation records, customer ratings, seat comfort, in-flight meals, in-flight entertainment, staff service, and baggage allowance were some of the criteria used to compare sixty-two airlines around the world.
In the Bounce study, Spirit ranked 59th and Allegiant 61st based on departures.
For many, it is no surprise that Spirit and Allegiant made the list. A 2022 American Customer Satisfaction Index Survey named Spirit the worst airline in the country. Similarly, Allegiant had the lowest percentage of on-time arrivals among all U.S. airlines this year.
Allegiant, however, has a different model than other airlines, the study points out. It thrives on an ultra-low-cost business model, which results in lower operating costs and more customer savings.
“Our fares are 'unbundled,' meaning that the base fare does not include the cost of amenities such as checked baggage, in-flight entertainment, priority boarding, or seat selection," an Allegiant official told Insider.
Most U.S. airlines did not do well in Bounce’s study, where none made the Top 20 Best Airlines in the World. However, Southwest Airlines was close, coming in at 21st.
