The U.S. Treasury Department removed a nephew of the Venezuelan first lady who is also the country’s former national treasurer from its sanctions list, it reported on Friday.

The U.S. Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) released a statement saying it was excluding Carlos Malpica Flores from its sanctions list.

The statement was published on the Treasury Department’s website after Washington officials and Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro met in Caracas in March as part of an effort to begin diplomatic negotiations between the country’s communist leaders and opposition movements.

Officials also reportedly talked about the possible removal of Flores at that meeting.

Flores previously served as a vice president of finance for Venezuela's state oil company PDVSA along with the possibility of granting a license for U.S. oil company Chevron to conduct operations in Venezuela.
