Three UN electoral experts arrived in Venezuela on Tuesday to observe the regional and municipal elections to be held on November 21.

“The authorities of the National Electoral Council welcomed at the headquarters of the Electoral Power the members of the Panel of Experts of the UN, who will be present at the 2021 regional and Municipal Elections,” tweeted the National Electoral Council.

The UN confirmed on social media that the trio of experts was already in Venezuela. The UN also clarified that it will not issue statements, but will submit a report to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

“Today the UN Panel of Electoral Experts has arrived in Venezuela,” said the UN. “The experts will not be issuing statements but will submit an internal report to the Secretary-General with recommendations to strengthen future electoral processes.”

“The panel will remain in the country until after election day. Panel members will meet with a wide range of political and civil society actors, as well as electoral authorities and experts,” indicated the UN in a statement on Tuesday.

The statement clarifies that this type of electoral assistance has been provided in the past to other countries at their request.
