This year’s Top Moving Destinations report by truck rental company Penske might surprise you. The Sun Belt took the first spots, followed by Texas.
This year saw two new additions compared to the 2020 list: Chicago and Charlotte, North Carolina. Both cities made it back to the list after being left out for five years and three years, respectively.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 20% more Americans moved in 2021 than the previous year. That is, around 14-23 billion people relocated.
The analysis uses data from its one-way truck rental reservations to form a list of the nation’s top 10 cities for movers. The company has been releasing the annual list since 2010.
The top 10 moving destinations, according to the report:
- Houston
- Las Vegas
- Phoenix
- Charlotte
- Denver
- San Antonio
- Dallas
- Orlando
- Austin
- Chicago
U-Haul’s Growth Index for 2021, which also uses data from where its one-way rental customers are moving to, showed similar trends. Texas took the number one spot, followed by Florida, Tennessee, South Carolina, and Arizona.
“The Texas economy is growing fast,” stated Kristina Ramos, U-Haul Company of South Austin president. “With a strong job market and low cost of living, it’s a no-brainer. Texas doesn’t have an income tax, so families get more for their money.”
