An alarming video shared on social media over the weekend shows unsuspecting riders having fun on a rollercoaster in North Carolina as one of the ride’s steel support pillars begins to crack.

Over the weekend, a visitor spotted and then recorded a large crack in one of the support pillars of Fury 325, one of the rides at the Carowinds amusement park in Charlotte, North Carolina.

The video, recorded by Jeremy Wagner, shows the exact moment the caster car goes by the location on the tracks, causing the top of the pillar to completely separate for a few seconds.

“I was trying to shoot the video, and my hands were shaking because I knew how quick this could be catastrophic,” said Wagner, who had been on the right eight times with his 14-year-old on the same day he recorded the video.

As a result of the video, the Carowinds amusement park said it closed down the roller coaster “after park personnel became aware” of the crack. Park spokeswoman Courtney McGarry Weber said the ride will remain closed until repairs are completed.

The North Carolina Department of Labor said on Sunday that its Elevator and Amusement Device Bureau “will be investigating” the incident at the Carowinds park.

“The North Carolina Department of Labor … (has) inspectors on site who are working to gather more information,” the agency said midday Monday. “We will be able to make a full assessment and provide further information as it becomes available. Safety always has been and always will be our top priority.”

Fury 325 is one of Carowinds’ main attractions and one of the “tallest, fastest, longest giga coasters in North America,” according to the park’s website. At 325 feet tall, it takes 32 riders on an 81-degree drop, reaching levels of up to 95 mph.
