shooting in downtown Chicago on Thursday night left two people dead and eight others injured, according to police.

Chicago police spokesman Tom Ahern said that the shooting took place at around 10:40 p.m. outside of a McDonald’s near the 800 block of North State Street, a few blocks away from the city’s shopping district known as the Magnificent Mile.

According to Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown, two groups of people were fighting when someone began shooting. The shooter and members of his group fled to the CTA subway.

"It escalated quickly to where some guy popped out with a gun," said Shaun Davis, who was inside the McDonald’s. "My guys tried to grab the gun, but in the midst of them grabbing the gun, it slipped my way and a shot popped out."

"We walked across the street to the store and next thing we know, people started shooting, and everybody just got hit," Deonna Jackson, a witness, said. "My first instinct was just run because I have been hit before."

The restaurant was significantly damaged by the bullets and many of its windows were shot out.

"There's blood from this end to this end," community activist Andrew Holmes told Fox 32. "But there's plenty of cameras here."

Authorities said that the suspect was caught and is currently in custody. A gun was also recovered.

Two men were shot and killed in the incident. Ten others were wounded by bullets are were either transported to hospitals or walked themselves in.

The investigation is still ongoing.

"It's hard to stand here day after day and see this happening in our city," said Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot. "Because it is a tragedy. I didn't use the word 'senseless violence' because there is no violence modifier. Violence is wrong. Violence tears apart our families and the fabric of our city. It's with a very heavy heart that I stand here before you today."

The shooting comes a week after a 16-year-old was killed by a shooting in Chicago’s Millennium Park, near the iconic “Bean” sculpture. A 17-year-old was charged with his murder. The incident led Chicago’s Mayor to impose a curfew for minors in the city to curb violence.
