President Joe Biden visited the gravesite of his first wife and baby daughter, who were killed in a car accident 50 years ago on Sunday.

The president attended a “private family memorial mass” at St. Joseph on the Brandywine Roman Catholic Church near the family’s home in Wilmington, Delaware, accompanied by his wife, Jill Biden, his daughter Ashley, his son Hunter Biden, and his grandchildren.

After the mass, the Biden’s walked over to the graveyard to visit the gravesites of Neilia Biden and Naomi, who was a little over a year old when they died in an accident.

On December 18, 1972, shortly after Biden was elected as Senator for Delaware, Neilia, 30, took Naomi and their two sons —Beau and Hunter—to buy a Christmas tree. On their way there, they were hit by a tractor-trailer.

While Beau, 4 at the time, was left with a broken leg and Hunter, 3, had a fractured skull, his wife and daughter did not survive the tragic accident.

President Biden remarried Jill Jacobs in 1977 and had their daughter Ashley, 41.

Beau Biden died in 2015 at the age of 46 from brain cancer. He is also buried in the same cemetery as his mother and sister.
