An 89-year-old woman died after two pit bulls attacked her and her 12-year-old grandson last week in Colorado, authorities said on Monday.

Police received a call reporting an animal bite at around 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at a backyard in Golden Colorado, about 15 miles outside of Denver. The call came from a neighbor’s house, where the 12-year-old boy fled to seek help.

When police arrived, they found the boy bleeding and an additional trail of blood leading to the home where the dogs were still mauling his grandmother.

Police used tasers and less-lethal shotguns but were unable to stop the attack until two more officers arrived at the scene.

"Each time the officers approached the victim, the dogs would circle the officers. Less lethal options were not effective," authorities said.

The 89-year-old woman succumbed to the injuries sustained in the attack and passed away. The grandson has since been released from the hospital and is recovering, according to the Golden Police Department.

The names of the two victims have not been released.

Police reported that the woman and her grandson knew the dogs, however, they did not provide any further details. One of the two dogs was injured during the attack and was euthanized at a veterinary hospital after the attack. The second dog was taken to an animal shelter and later euthanized after its owner surrendered care to the facility.

The investigation into the attack is ongoing.
