A man remains in custody after being accused of shooting his 2-year-old niece and killing her during a family argument that took place in Maine, according to media reports on Sunday.
The events occurred on Saturday afternoon in the resort town of Wells, when Andrew Huber-Young, 19, allegedly opened fire on his niece Octavia Jean Huber-Young. The minor's father and grandfather were injured in the conflict, reported the Portland Press Herald.
Authorities said Octavia was rushed to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. An autopsy is expected to be performed in the next few days.
"Andrew Huber Young was transported to the York County Jail where he is being held without bond," the Police Department in Wells wrote on Facebook.
Another uncle of the victim, Craig Higgins, told the Portland Press that the suspect was the brother of the minor's father, Ethan Huber-Young.
Higgins stated on his Facebook account how devastated he was by the death of his niece Octavia, questioning how a family argument ended in gunfire.
"I am so angry at the world, even God Himself. Why did God have to take our precious little Octavia? I just don't understand why anyone would get angry and turn that anger into violence and shoot an innocent 2-year-old girl," Higgins said in a release, according to El Diario. "Octavia was a precious little girl."
Higgins explained that the attacker was kicked out of the house after the discussion. After leaving, he returned to the house and began shooting as Ethan held Octavia.
The minor's mother, Samantha Higgins, gave statements to WGME CBS 13, claiming that her daughter was full of life.
"When she wanted my attention, she would always take my finger and take me to her room and play with her. And she always loved to go out and play on a swing," her mother said.
The case remains under investigation.
