Kim Kardashian joined millions of others who are criticizing the harsh sentence given to a Cuban truck driver who was involved in a tragic accident that resulted in four deaths.

Rogel Lazaro Aguilera-Mederos was sentenced to 110 years in prison after he lost his brakes and caused an accident that killed four people and injured several others in Colorado in April 2019.

In October, a jury found Aguilera-Mederos guilty of 27 criminal charges and in December he was sentenced to 110 years in prison.

As of Wednesday, over 4,759,949 people have signed a petition asking Colorado Governor Jared Polis to commute Aguilera-Mederos’ sentence or to grant him a pardon.

On Tuesday, Kim Kardashian tweeted about Aguilera-Mederos’ case.

“He was not drunk or under the influence, his brakes on the semi tractor-trailer failed,” she wrote.

“Another shocking and unfair part of this case is that the judge didn’t want to sentence him to such a lengthy sentence. However, because of the mandatory minimums in Colorado, his hands were tied. Mandatory minimums take away judicial discretion and need to end,” tweeted Kardashian.

Judge Bruce A. Jones, who sentenced Aguilera-Mederos, has also acknowledged that even though Aguilera-Mederos could have acted differently, the accident was just an accident.

“Colorado law really has to be changed and this is so unfair. @GovofCO is a really good person and I know he will do the right thing,” she concluded.
