Gun goes off in third-grader's backpack at Virginia school

The Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office reported no related injuries.

A handgun went off Monday morning inside a third-grader's  backpack in a Virginia elementary school, according to police.

The incident took place at Lee Hill Elementary School, in Spotsylvania County. The county sheriff's office reported no injuries,  according to an NBC News affiliate.

The student didn't bring the gun with the intent to harm anyone, and detectives are interviewing the child's parents

Spotsylvania County Public Schools said that the staff followed safety protocols by securing the weapon and evacuating the students.
