An intoxicated pilot was arrested after landing a small plane on Friday on Interstate 70 near Kansas City, Missouri, because he had allegedly ran out of fuel.

About 20 minutes after taking off, the plane had to make an emergency landing on Interstate 70 just east of Grain Valley, about 20 miles from Kansas City, at around 2:30 a.m., causing the interstate’s westbound lanes to close for two and a half hours.

Authorities said the pilot had radioed the tower, saying he had run out of fuel and had to make the emergency landing.

During the landing, the Piper Cherokee single-engine aircraft was able to avoid all vehicles but had a “minor collision” with a guardrail, said the Missouri State Highway. Patrol.

The pilot had minor injuries and was taken to a hospital to be treated before his arrest. There were no other passengers.

The 35-year-old pilot was “arrested on suspicion of DWI, careless and imprudent actions that involved a crash, felony possession of a controlled substance, felony unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of less than 10 grams of marijuana and unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia, according to the arrest report,” reported the Kansas City Star.

The pilot had a student license that was issued in January 2020, according to the FAA airmen registry.
