Highland Park shooting: Suspect Robert Crimo III indicted on 117 counts

An alleged suspect who is accused of a mass shooting that occurred during a Fourth of July parade in the suburbs of Chicago was indicted by a grand jury on Wednesday on 117 counts. 

Robert “Bobby” Crimo III, 21, is facing 21 counts of first-degree murder—three counts for each of the deceased victims. The suspect also faces 48 counts of attempted murder and 48 counts of aggravated battery with firearms for each victim that was struck by a bullet or hit with shrapnel.

Crimo admitted to the mass shooting in a voluntary statement to authorities after his arrest on July 4. The day after the shooting, Crimo was initially charged with seven counts of first-degree murder. 

Crimo’s is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday, August 3 for his arraignment. 

“I want to thank law enforcement and the prosecutors who presented evidence to the grand jury today. Our investigation continues, and our victim specialists are working around the clock to support all those affected by this crime that led to 117 felony counts being filed today,” State’s Attorney Eric Rinehart said. 

During a Fourth of July parade in the Chicago suburb of Highland Park, Crimo opened fire from a rooftop with an assault-style rifle, killing seven people and wounding more than 30. When the shooting started, panicked people started fleeing the parade site, leaving behind chairs, strollers, and blankets. 

Those killed in the shooting were identified by authorities as Katherine Goldstein, 64; Irina McCarthy, 35; Kevin McCarthy, 37; Jacquelyn Sundheim, 63; Stephen Straus, 88; Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza, 78; and Eduardo Uvaldo, 69.
