A firefighter caught a baby that was dropped out of a second-story window of a building that had caught fire in Washington, D.C.

Firefighters responded to a fire in an apartment building in southeast D.C. on Sunday night.

When they arrived at the scene, they found a man sitting on the window sill of an apartment on fire. The man had his 2-year-old baby in his arms.

“Get my baby!” the man yelled.

Firefighter Jared McKinney sprang into action and caught the baby as the man let go of his child. McKinney grabbed the boy from under his armpits, held him close to his chest, and moved him far away from the fire.

“Everything happened so fast I didn’t have time to get nervous it was more so I had a job that had to get done and I executed it to the best of my ability," McKiney said

"The only thing that was going through my mind was, 'Make sure you secure the catch.' Just make sure I secured the catch with the kid," he added.

Firefighters then put a 24-foot ladder near the window and evacuated the rest of the family. Seven people were evaluated by first responders, but no one needed to be taken to the hospital, said the D.C. fire department.

When the ordeal was over, the father of the child approached McKinney to thank him.

"Me being a father myself, you always want to protect your kids. So I could definitely see in his face that he wanted to get his family to safety as quickly as possible by any means necessary," McKinney said. "I was just glad I was there to help him."
