Elon Musk searching for a new CEO for Twitter, say sources 

Twitter’s new owner is searching for a new CEO for the social media company after users voted in favor of his stepping down from the position, sources told CNBC.

On Sunday, Musk launched a Twitter poll asking users whether he should step down as CEO of the company, promising his followers that he would abide by the results. 

At least 17 million respondents from the Twitter community voted that the world’s second-richest man should step down with 57.5% of the vote against 42.5% voting for him to continue in his role.

Sources told CNBC’s David Faber that Musk has indeed been looking for a new CEO even before he launched the poll on Sunday. 

Last month, Musk said he planned to reduce his time as CEO of Twitter and “find somebody else to run Twitter over time.” However, on Sunday, he said that there was “no successor” for the position yet. 

“The question is not finding a CEO, the question is finding a CEO who can keep Twitter alive,” Musk said in a response to a comment. 

"No one wants the job who can actually keep Twitter alive," he tweeted after the poll.

Elon Musk, also the CEO of Tesla, bought Twitter for $44 billion in October and has made several changes that have sparked a backlash from the platform’s users. 

During his first few months Twitter’s new owner, Musk fired top managers, implemented privacy changes, reinstated suspended accounts, and announced new fees associated with the social media platform.
