Mexican authorities found the bodies of three individuals on Sunday in the Rio Grande River, which separates Mexico and the United States along the Texan border, reported The Associated Press.
According to Mexico’s National Immigration Institute, the individuals were most likely migrants who drowned while trying to cross the river into the U.S.
The institute added that two of the bodies had no identification on them, but the third one had documents stating that he was from Nicaragua.
A woman and two children, an eight-year-old boy and a two-year-old girl, from Honduras were also found by authorities in the river. They had attempted to cross the waters but were unable to continue due to the cold temperatures and strong currents.
Authorities had to rescue the three by airboat. They were taken to a shelter in the city of Piedras Negras.
This incident is the latest in a string of deaths of migrants who are attempting to cross the border. Last week, five migrants were found dead inside a railroad car on their way to the U.S. According to authorities, the migrants died from severe dehydration and heatstroke.
Earlier this month, Mexican authorities found the body of a minor floating in the Rio Grande in Coahuila. The U.S. Border Patrol retrieved the body.
Similarly, a video shared on social media captured a Nicaraguan man drowning while trying to cross the Rio Grande River into Eagle Pass, Texas. The video shows the man struggling to keep afloat in the water, while his friend holds on to a cement pillar nearby. Eventually, the man does not resurface.
