An amazon delivery driver was found dead close to his truck with possible dog bite injuries on Monday in Excelsior Springs, Missouri, prompting an investigation into his death, authorities reported.

Officers responded to a report at around 7 p.m. of an Amazon delivery truck that was suspiciously parked in front of a residential house for several hours.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the driver’s body. Close by they also spotted a German shepherd and a mastiff, who were behaving aggressively.

One of the deputies shot and injured one of the dogs before they ran into the home. The owners of the home and the dogs were not present at the time, according to Ray County Sheriff Scott Childers.

Childers followed the dogs into the house, but they continued to be aggressive towards him.

“They continued to be aggressive, and I had to kill them,” said Childers.

Authorities have yet to confirm whether the driver died from a dog attack, however, Childers noted that the body had serious injuries.

“We do not know the cause of death yet, but the Amazon driver did have a substantial amount of damage to his body very similar to that of canine bites.”

An autopsy and necropsy will be performed in the following days to determine the cause of death, Childers added.

“We’re deeply saddened by tonight’s tragic incident involving a member of our Amazon family and will be providing support to the team and the driver’s loved ones,” Amazon said in a statement. “We are assisting law enforcement in their investigation.”

In response to the death of the delivery driver, Amazon announced it would start placing puppy paw print icons on delivery routes to let drivers know that they should “be aware of a dog” at certain drop-off locations.

“If we know Fido is nearby, we’ll add the paw print to give you a heads up,” the note sent to drivers reads. “As always, contact the customer to help you with the pet, or ‘Driver Support’ in the Delivery App if you can’t reach the customer.”
