A six-year-old boy died Saturday after drowning while swimming in Lake Erie at East Harbor State Park, Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR), is investigating the drowning and indicated that the child was swimming in the swim zone in the beach area.

The child went into the water, but did not come back out.

Witnesses to the incident recovered the child and attempted to revive him by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), but were unsuccessful. It is unknown if there was a lifeguard nearby.

Although the child was in the swimming zone, ODNR reminds all swimmers to stay in assigned areas on the beach or in the lake and to keep an eye on children while in the water.

No further information is available about the drowning.

In 2019, a Fremont man drowned to death while swimming at East Harbor State Park, which has a 1,500-foot sandy beach on Lake Erie.
