Around 120,872 pounds of ground beef are being recalled in the United States over concerns that they might be contaminated with E. coli, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said.

In a statement released on Monday, the FSIS said that it was recalling beef products produced between February 1, 2022 and April 8, 2022 from Lakeside Refrigerated Services, a company in New Jersey. The products affected include ground beef, beef patties, meatloaf mix, and other beef varieties.

The recalled beef includes brands such as Thomas Farms, Nature’s Reserve, Naturally Better, and Marketside Butcher, among others. The recalled products have the establishment number “EST. 46841” within the USDA inspection mark, the statement added.

“The problem was discovered during routine FSIS testing of imported products. There have been no confirmed reports of illness or adverse reactions due to consumption of these products,” said the statement.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Escherichia coli, commonly known as E. coli, is a bacteria that lives in people’s intestines. If contracted, it can cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and other symptoms. E. coli can be transmitted through contaminated water, food, or through contact with animals or people. People can show symptoms two to eight days after consuming the products.

“FSIS is concerned that some products may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers,” the statement continues. “Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.”
