A Venezuelan man took to Twitter on Tuesday to announce that he and his wife had joined Ukraine’s International Legion of Territorial Defense – a unit made for “anyone who wants to join the defense of Ukraine, Europe and the world can come and fight side by side with the Ukrainians against the Russian war criminals.”

In a viral video shared on social media by his daughter, Elizabeth Evtushenko, the Venezuelan man named David said that he and his wife are eager to join the fight for Ukraine’s liberation.

"We do it with conviction and we do it with love, above all things. This country has given me as much as Venezuela has given me and I would certainly do it for Venezuela as well. As presently I cannot do it there, I am doing it here in Kiev. Those are my reasons and I am satisfied with them," he said.

Venezuela has been in the midst of a severe socio-political and economic crisis under the dictatorship of Nicoals Maduro for several years and, since 2014, more than 6 million Venezuelans have left their homes and resettled abroad – in hopes of finding freedom and economic prosperity.

During a media briefing on Saturday, the Ukrainian president invited “every friend of Ukraine” to join his armed forces and citizen soldiers in their fight for freedom.

“Every friend of Ukraine who wants to join Ukraine in defending the country, please come over. We will give you weapons. It will be announced very shortly, how this can be done. Everyone who is defending Ukraine is a hero,” he said.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba also took to Twitter on Saturday, asking foreigners to come fight.

“Foreigners willing to defend Ukraine and world order as part of the International Legion of Territorial Defense of Ukraine, I invite you to contact foreign diplomatic missions of Ukraine in your respective countries.”
