Hours after Russian troops abandoned their post at Snake Island, Moscow fired missiles on Friday near Ukraine’s Black Sea port of Odesa, destroying part of an apartment building. Authorities say at least 19 people were killed during the attack.

Russia launched the missiles at around 1:00 a.m. onto the resort village of Sehiivka, completely destroying a section of an apartment block. The attack also damaged the walls and windows of the 14-story building next door, according to the Ukrainian emergency ministry.

Neighbors helped look through the rubble of the nine-story apartment building, hoping to rescue anyone trapped inside the building.

“We came here to the site, assessed the situation together with emergency workers and locals, and together helped those who survived. And those who unfortunately died. We helped to carry them away,” said Oleksandr Abramov, who lives nearby and rushed to the scene after the attack.

Officials say at least 16 people died at the apartment block. Three others, including a minor, were killed by missiles that hit nearby holiday camps. Around 38 others were hospitalized with injuries.

Out of the 152 individuals that lived in the apartment building, 41 were rescued. A rescue operation is underway to find anyone who might have been buried under the rubble.

“A terrorist country is killing our people. In response to defeats on the battlefield, they fight civilians,” Andriy Yermak, the chief of staff to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in response to the attack.

While the regional governor said the attack came from the direction of the Black Sea, the Kremlin denied attacking civilians.

"I would like to remind you of the president's words that the Russian Armed Forces do not work with civilian targets," Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The attack comes a few days after a Russian missile destroyed a crowded shopping mall, killing at least 19 people and injuring 59 others.
