One student was killed and another was injured after a student opened fire at a Texas high school on Monday morning. The suspect has been arrested and charged with murder, authorities said.

The shooting took place outside Lamar High School in Arlington, Texas, near Dallas, at around 6:55 a.m., before classes started, according to police.

A male student was shot and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A female victim was “grazed” by shrapnel and received medical care. Her injuries are non-life threatening, according to Arlington police Chief Al jones.

The school went into lockdown as soon as the shooting began. The buses and other students arriving at school were diverted from campus. Students and staff were dismissed for the day, said school district spokesperson Anita Foster.

A male student suspected of being the shooter was arrested “within minutes” of the shooting at the scene and charged with capital murder. His identity was not released because he is a minor, said Jones. He is being held at a juvenile detention center in the area.

"Witnesses were able to call 9-1-1 dispatch with a good description of the shooter," said Jones. "As officers were responding to the scene, they located an individual that matched that description. The officers surrounded the individual and took him into custody without incident."

Investigators recovered the gun used in the shooting. The motive remains unclear. Police believe it may have been a targeted shooting.

"We recovered a weapon we believe was used in the shooting this morning," Jones added. "I just want to make this point known: the shooter never entered the school building, and he left the campus immediately after the shots were fired."
