One person died and 11 others were wounded after shots were fired at a rap concert in Dallas on Sunday.

"A preliminary investigation determined that at the event, one individual fired a gun into the air, then another unknown individual fired a gun in the crowd’s direction," the Dallas Police Department said in a statement.

Witnesses claim that the sound of gunshots caused panic in the crowd as people tried to run away from the event. Police responded to a call reporting gunshots at around 12:13 a.m.

Authorities believe that one individual fired shots into the air and a second individual fired in the crowd's direction.

Police identified the deceased concert-goer as Kealon Dejuane Gilmore, 26. He was found near the stage with a fatal gunshot wound to his head and was reported dead at the scene.

Eleven others were wounded and were transported to different hospitals. One of the victims is in critical condition, while the rest are stable. At least three victims were juveniles, reported the police.

"Last night’s violence was horrific and unacceptable. I am praying for the victims, and I look forward to our police department bringing those responsible to justice," Dallas Mayor Eric Johnson said. "Public safety remains our top priority, and I will be conferring with Police Chief Eddie Garcia to see what more can be done to stop this kind of violence in our city."

The “Second Annual Epic Easter Bike Out & Field Party” was organized at a rural lot in the Oak Cliffs neighborhood of Dallas and was going to be headlined by Big Boogie, a Memphis-based rapper. Reports indicate that around 2,000 individuals attended the event.

Fliers for the event announced that Dallas police officers would be present at the concert, and attendees would be screened with metal detectors before entering the premises.

"Our goal was to organize a positive event for and by our people. We took the necessary steps to offer safety by having Dallas Police officers and security personnel on scene. Additionally, emergency officers and vehicles were on standby,” the organizer of the event said in a statement after the shooting.

"However, some things were still out of our control. Our team did not expect a turn out of that capacity, but we truly appreciate the support of all that came & those who traveled to attend. Our prayers and deepest condolences go out to the individuals and families involved," the statement added.

No arrests have been made. The shooting is still under investigation.
