The elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, in which a gunman last month killed 19 students and two teachers will be demolished, the city's mayor said.

Mayor Don McLaughlin made the announcement during a city council meeting Tuesday night, about a month after the May 24 massacre at Robb Elementary School.

McLaughlin said he didn't think any child or teacher should be asked to return to Robb Elementary School, according to NBC News.

The mayor said after talking with the school system's superintendent that it was his "understanding" that school will be demolished

"You can never ask a child to go back or a teacher to go back in that school ever," he also said.

Officials have yet to announce a date for when the demolition will occur.
