A man and a woman were arrested for the "disgusting" state of their home, where four children were also living, the media reported on Monday.

Residents of the apartment complex located at 6700 Montgomery Drive, northeast of San Antonio, Texas, called authorities reporting a foul odor coming from one of the units.

When the agents arrived at the site, they found four children between the ages of 2 and 13 living in subhuman conditions.

At a press conference, Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said that the smell was so strong that police expected to find a decomposing body but instead found bags of garbage that had rotting food, insects, and feces, according to Telemundo.

Salazar said it was one of the worst child endangerment scenes he had ever seen, claiming that his team walked among rats while conducting the investigation.

The sheriff said the two adults arrested were the mother of the four children and a man who lived with the family, believed to be of European descent, and the father of two of the children.

Both face four counts of child endangerment, reported ksat.com. The suspect is a hospital employee.

The children will be relocated with their other relatives for the time being, Salazar concluded.
