A train derailment in El Paso, Tex., left one person dead and saw multiple homes evacuated for a brief period of time, authorities said on Tuesday.

Two train cars jumped the tracks near Barton St. in the southeastern portion of the city, less than one mile from the U.S. / Mexico border, the El Paso Fire Department said on Tuesday.

The cars "derailed and damaged a backyard shed, a fence and a gas meter," the fire department said in a tweet, adding that a "damaged gas line [was] shut down" and "one fatality [was] reported."

The fire department noted that an earlier evacuation in the area had been lifted.

A spokesman for the fire department, meanwhile, told Fox News Digital that the cars were carrying "wheat grains" when they derailed.
