A “mystery animal” was spotted by Texas park officials in the Rio Grande Valley last week, leaving them confused about its identity.
Texas Park and Wildlife officials at the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park shared the pictures on their Facebook page of a strange-looking, four-legged animal captured walking around the park at night by their surveillance cameras.
“We’re scratching our heads trying to identify this elusive creature. Is it a new species? An escapee from a nearby zoo? Or just a park ranger in disguise?” the state park wrote. “Regardless, it’s thrilling to see such an incredible animal in its natural habitat.”
The post received more than 600 comments from users trying to identify the mysterious animal.
“If it’s not a bear, then I would guess a park ranger in disguise!!” one Facebook user, while others called it a “good ol’ Texas size rat” or a “pregnant badger!”
Another user chimed in, saying “Jaguarundi? Rare in Texas but I’ve seen one once.”
“If it's not a bear, then I would guess a park ranger in disguise!! Lol,” said another.
After raising the curiosity of many Facebook users, park officials finally weighed in on what they believed it could be.
Wow, this photo has got a lot of attention! We agree with most of the comments that this is very likely an American Badger (not to be confused with the Honey Badger that lives in Africa and Asia and is rumored to not care very much),” the state park said.
“While American Badgers are not commonly seen in the valley (partly due to their nocturnal behavior), this is part of their natural range,” it added.
The exact location of where the badger was found is unknown.
