Celia "Sally" Martinez Gonzales, grandmother of Salvador Ramos, the gunman in the Robb Elementary School shooting in Uvalde, may never speak again after being shot in the mouth last Tuesday by her grandson.
Ramos shot his 66-year-old grandmother before going to an elementary school and killing 19 students and two teachers. Martinez managed to survive but remained in critical condition for days.
Relatives of the victim told the New York Post on Sunday that the shot to the mouth shattered all of her teeth.
"The bullet entered Sally's jaw right next to her mouth and shattered all of her teeth," noted Jason Ybarra, Martinez's second cousin. "If the bullet had been an inch in another direction, it would have blown her head off."
"She's doing pretty well, considering what happened. But she may never be able to speak again" because of the damage to her mouth and vocal cords, he added.
Ybarra told the NY Post that Martinez only communicates in writing and that she has already undergone several surgeries due to the severity of her injuries. The last one was on Sunday, May 29, and there are still many more to go, he continued.
Last Thursday, Rolando Reyes, Celia Martinez's husband, told the NY Post that she was awake but in a lot of pain.
"She has a notebook where she writes down what she's trying to say, but when we can't decipher it, she gets frustrated," Reyes explained.
Salvador Ramos had been staying with his grandparents for the past two to three months before carrying out the shooting.
Family, Friends, and neighbors in the town of Uvalde gathered on Wednesday night to hold a vigil for the victims of the shooting. A total of 21 people were killed, including 19 children between the ages of eight and ten and two teachers.
