Two hospital employees were killed in a shooting incident at Methodist Dallas Medical Center on Saturday morning, the local health system said.

The shooting happened inside the hospital on the 1400 block of North Avenue at around 11 a.m. local time on Saturday, Dallas police said.

According to a preliminary investigation of the incident, the shooter shot and killed the two maternity ward nurses before being confronted by a Methodist Health System police officer.

The officer shot and injured the suspect, identified as Nestor Hernandez, 30. The suspect was detained and transported to another hospital for treatment. Hernandez was arrested by Methodist Health police on capital murder charges.

Police said that the details of the shooting were unclear and do not yet have a possible motive.

Dallas police said Hernandez is currently on parole for aggravated robbery and was wearing an ankle monitor at the time of the shooting.

“This is a tragedy, an abhorrent failure of our criminal system,” said Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia in a tweet.

“The Methodist Health System Family is heartbroken at the loss of two of our beloved team members. Our entire organization is grieving this unimaginable tragedy,” said the hospital in a statement.

“Our prayers are with our lost co-workers and their families, as well as our entire Methodist family. We appreciate the community’s support during this difficult time,” it added.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released. The incident is still under investigation.
