At least 21 people, 19 students and two teachers, were killed on Tuesday during a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. The students were in fourth grade.

The shooter allegedly left his vehicle and entered Robb Elementary School around 11:45 a.m. with a handgun and rifle. "He shot and killed, in a horrific and incomprehensible manner, 14 students and killed one teacher," Texas Governor Greg Abbott said before the other fatalities were confirmed.

Abbott later reported that 19 of the deceased were students. In addition, two female teachers were killed: Eva Mireles, a teacher for 17 years, and Irma García, who had been at Robb Elementary School for more than 23 years.

The shooter was identified as 18-year-old Salvadore Ramos, said Texas Governor Greg Abbott said at a press conference in Abilene. The attacker was shot and killed by officers.

Initial reports also indicate that Ramos first shot his grandmother at her home before going to the school, Abbott added.

Uvalde Memorial Hospital said 13 students were being treated in the emergency room. Two of the students were transferred to San Antonio. Two individuals were pronounced dead on arrival.

University Health in San Antonio reported two patients from the elementary school shooting, a 10-year-old and a 66 year-old-woman, both in critical condition. The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio also said it received wounded patients from the shooting.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including border patrol and police from nearby cities, responded to the scene. Students and school staff were evacuated to Uvalde’s civic center.

Uvalde is about 90 minutes west of San Antonio, where almost nearly half of the population is non-English speaking, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. Robb Elementary serves second through fourth-grade students and has around 600 students.

This is a developing story.
