Boricua fighter Edgar Berlanga admitted that he tried to bite Alexis Angulo's ear during their June 12 fight at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Berlanga defeated Angulo by unanimous decision to extend his unbeaten record to 20-0 in professional boxing. But Berlanga was nearly disqualified over "Mike Tyson bite" to his opponent. The Puerto Rican apologized and has admitted he is "embarrassed" about the episode, which could mark his career.

The super-middleweight fought Colombian Alexis Angulo for ten rounds, but in the seventh round, controversy erupted when Berlanga bit Angulo but went unpunished. The Puerto Rican's victory will be remembered for the controversial incident that the referee overlooked.

The episode reminded fans of Mike Tyson's famous bite on Evander Holyfield in 1997, which got him disqualified in their rematch. But this time, Berlanga, who won by unanimous decision, seemed to shrug off the incident immediately after the fight. The winner told ESPN, "I was throwing elbows. I was about to do a Mike Tyson on him."

But he later apologized in a message on his social media. "I reacted badly, and I take full responsibility. Going forward, I will be more conscious and encouraging in my behavior. Once again, I apologize."

Berlanga, 25, is a promising boxer and, at one point in his career, scored 16 consecutive first-round knockouts. Since then, he has won four more times.

Angulo, 38, put Berlanga to the toughest test of his undefeated career and ended up in despair even though the judges saw him as the winner. While Tyson was disqualified for his historic bite on Evander Holyfield, Berlanga managed to come out of the incident unscathed.

He probably avoided punishment by missing Angulo's ear, making contact with his opponent's shoulder instead. However, public opinion among combat sports fans is quite critical of the Puerto Rican Berlanga.
