Major League Baseball has announced that as many as five Latino ballplayers have been nominated to receive the Roberto Clemente Award, a prestigious honor named after the Puerto Rican Hall of Famer.

The award was originally named after Clemente to honor the him as the MLB player with the greatest contribution to humanitarian causes.

This year, the Detroit Tigers nominated historic Venezuelan Miguel Cabrera, while compatriot José Altuve will represent the Houston Astros. The New York Yankees nominated catcher José Treviño, the Kansas City Royals nominated Nicky López and the Miami Marlins nominated Pablo López.

Each team made their nomination based on their recognition of the player's philanthropic and humanitarian activities.

The 2022 MLB nomination list includes a total of 30 players and 16 first time honorees, all of whom have engaged in diverse community and philanthropic activities that focus on important causes, such as supporting underprivileged children and communities in the United States and around the world, supporting those affected by cancer and other diseases, championing social justice initiatives, protecting the environment, and more.

The award recognizes each year the Major League player who best represents the game through his or her commitment to the community, with contributions on and off the field.

The nominees will be officially recognized this Thursday on Roberto Clemente Day in the Major Leagues.

MLB established Roberto Clemente Day in 2002 to honor the legacy of the late Hall of Famer. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the tragic plane crash in which Clemente died on December 31, 1972, while traveling to help earthquake victims in Nicaragua.
