A small airplane crashed on a busy main street in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince on Wednesday, killing at least six people, authorities reported.

The plane was on route to the city of Jacmel when its engine failed, reported the Haitian civil aviation authority. The airplane sent a distress signal around 20 minutes after takeoff at 4:04 p.m., eventually coming down in the neighborhood of Carrefour.

"I am deeply saddened by the crash of a small plane on the road to Carrefour, which caused deaths and injuries. I extend my sympathies to the families of the victims, who have been just plunged into the greatest desolation by this new tragedy," Prime Minister Ariel Henry posted on Twitter.

The Mayor of the commune of Carrefour, Jude Edouard Pierre, said six people died from the crash and injured several people who were on the ground. The pilot died from injuries at the hospital, according to a government source.
