A 26-year-old woman fell to her death from a 54th-floor rooftop bar on Wednesday in New York City.

The New York Police Department said the incident happened at around 3:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Centric Hotel on 45th Street, near Times Square.

The woman was in Bar 54, New York City’s highest open-air rooftop bar, when she plunged over the side. She landed on a balcony on the 27th floor.

Emergency responders found the woman unresponsive when they arrived. The woman, whose name has not yet been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police are investigating the death to determine whether she could have accidentally fallen or if she purposefully jumped off.

However, a report by the New York Post says that the woman was “seen jumping” from the bar.

“She walked right by me and I didn’t think anything of it,” the hotel staff said. “She was a young girl with a reservation for the bar.”

According to the staff, the woman abruptly got up, headed to the bar’s terrace, and stood up on a piece of furniture next to the glass railing.

“It’s easy because the tables and chairs are right near the glass,” the man said. “She didn’t say anything.”

Customers alerted the staff about the woman going over the railing, saying that she had jumped, the staffer said.

"We are deeply saddened by the situation that occurred this afternoon at our hotel and our thoughts go out to the individual’s family and those who have been affected," the Hyatt said in a statement.

“We are working closely with local authorities and all inquiries should be directed to the New York Police Department,” it added.

Bar 54 remained closed for the rest of the day, according to a hotel employee.

It wasn’t immediately clear whether the woman was staying at the hotel or just visiting the rooftop bar.
