A New York police officer was caught on camera punching a woman in the face, causing her to fall over on the ground when she allegedly attempted to stop an arrest in Harlem on Tuesday.

The video, which was shared on social media, shows police 32nd Precinct in Harlem moving in to arrest a man wanted for attempted murder.

A woman later identified as Tamani Crum is seen walking towards the 22-year-old suspect, identified as James Elvin, and briefly talks to him.

She then appears to be struggling with police officers. Suddenly an officer, identified later as Kendo Kinsey, pushes her away from the crowd. When she shoves the officer back, he punches her in the face, causing her to immediately fall down.

“Why would you do that?” bystanders can be heard saying as she lies on the ground.

Moments later, the police pick up Crum and placed her in handcuffs.

“While police were effecting the arrest multiple individuals on scene interfered by physically assaulting numerous officers. One officer sustained a minor injury to the head,” said a statement released by the NYPD.

Crum was charged with assaulting an officer, resisting arrest, and obstructing governmental administration.

Elvin was sought in connection to an attempted murder earlier this month. During his arrest, he was found to have a firearm and a controlled substance in his possession, the NYPD said.

According to an NYPD spokesperson, the officer who punched the woman has not yet been disciplined. However, his actions sparked a lot of criticism on social media.

“He cold knocked her out. He's not better than the people who are knocking people out in the street,” said Crum’s grandmother. He should never have put his hands on her or any female. He's wrong.”

New York City Mayor Eric Adams said there would be an investigation of the incident, but asked the public to remain calm in the meantime.

“It's a lot of madness going on. This is not just something that is a theatrical performance,” he said. “This is real danger. This person was wanted for murder. This person had a loaded gun.”
