A New York City construction worker died after falling four floors from a building scaffolding on the Upper West Side on Monday morning, authorities said.
The 36-year-old worker was on the scaffolding outside a building at 263 West End Avenue in Manhattan’s Upper West Side when he fell at around 11:25 a.m. The worker was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The man’s identity was not immediately released. However, authorities confirmed that he was a worker for Rennon Construction Corp, according to Gothamist.
A preliminary investigation found that the man was installing netting around the scaffolding on the 15th floor of the building when he fell to the roof of the sidewalk shed below, said a spokesperson for the Department of Buildings (DOB), Andrew Rudansky.
The work being carried out on the 23-story building was ordered to stop, in order to investigate whether the site was safe to continue the work.
“Construction workers in our city deserve a safe working environment, and incidents like today’s fatal fall are completely unacceptable,” DOB spokesperson Ryan J. Degan said in a statement.
“We are conducting a thorough investigation, along with our partners in law enforcement, into exactly how this could have happened, and to determine whether any corners were cut on the job which may have been contributing factors,” he added.
The death is the second construction fatality in the Big Apple this month, the DOB said.
