A former Long Island high school volleyball coach accused of raping a 15-year-old player committed suicide last Friday hours after the disturbing allegations came to light, according to a report published by the New York Daily News.
Jason Maser, 22, intentionally walked in front of a train around 10:35 p.m. near the Syosset station on Long Island Rail Road, MTA Police Department spokesman Michael Cortez said in a statement.
He was pronounced dead at the scene and it was learned that he left a suicide note.
Maser had been arrested last Thursday. According to police, he was accused of raping a 15-year-old girl on Feb. 7 and a second time on March 7 inside his Jeep.
The victim played on two volleyball teams that Maser coached: Sacred Heart Academy, a Catholic girls' school in Hempstead; and B&B Volleyball, an Albertson team, police said. He was fired from both teams after the accusations became known.
At his court appearance Friday afternoon in Hempstead, Maser pleaded not guilty to two counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault and one count of endangering a child.
The defendant posted bail of $75,000 and was released, Newsday reported. Police believe there may be more victims.
Prior to Maser's arrest, B&B told parents that it had learned of an “inappropriate sexual relationship between an adult who coached for B&B Volleyball and one of our players.” When Sacred Heart learned of the allegations, it contacted with the authorities “immediately.”
