An 82-year-old New York woman was found gasping for air at a funeral home nearly three hours after she was pronounced dead on Saturday, authorities said.

The woman was pronounced dead at the Water’s Edge Rehab and Nursing Center in Port Jefferson in Long Island, New York at 11:15 a.m.

After her death, she was taken to the O.B. Davis Funeral Home, four miles away from the nursing home. However, at 2:09 p.m. staff found that she was breathing, authorities said.

The woman was immediately rushed to a hospital. Her identity and current condition are unknown.

The bizarre incident sparked an investigation by the Suffolk County police and the New York State Department of Health. The state’s Attorney General is also looking into the matter.

“This is an awful situation that caused unnecessary trauma for the impacted resident and her loved ones,” the attorney general’s office said in a statement obtained by CNN.

“Out of respect for the privacy and confidentiality of the families we are honored to serve, we are not in a position to comment further on this matter,” the funeral home told WABC.

A similar incident took place in Iowa last week when a 66-year-old woman was pronounced dead at a hospice care facility but was found gasping for air in the body bag when it arrived at the funeral home.
