A record number of American citizens are crossing the border to live in Mexico, according to a new report published by Mexico’s Interior Ministry.

According to the data published by the department, more than 8,000 U.S. nationals were granted temporary resident visas to live in Mexico during the first nine months of 2022, an 85% increase over the same period in 2019.

The figure represents a record number for this migration pattern since the data began being compiled in 2010, Bloomberg reported.

Most Americans moving to Mexico chose Mexico City as their top destination to move to, representing nearly 19% of the temporary resident visas issued or 1,619 U.S. citizens, according to the Mexico News Daily.

Mexico City is followed by Jalisco, where 1,515 foreigners reside. Other popular states for temporary residents from the U.S. include Quintana Roo, Baja California Sur, and Yucatan.

In addition to the temporary visas granted by Mexico, the number of U.S. citizens granted permanent residency in the country also increased by almost 48% compared to 2019.

During the first nine months of the year, 5,418 Americans were given Mexican permanent residency, the ministry said in the report. Foreigners who are given permanent residency must meet several criteria, including income requirements, family ties, and sponsorship.

According to Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum, the influx of foreigners into the city, who are mostly remote workers, will benefit parts of the city that do not usually attract visitors.

To welcome the temporary residents, Mexico City announced last week a new partnership with Airbnb to encourage foreigners to move to the city, particularly young remote workers.
