Mexican President Manuel Andres Lopez Obrador said on Thursday that he plans to completely withdraw from politics after his current six-year term ends in September 2024.

While many had speculated that the president would still have a significant role in his Morena party when his term ended, Lopez Obrador said during his daily press at the National Palace that he would not mix with politics or appear at political events at all.

“I am going to retire completely,” he said. “I will never again appear at any public event.”

“I do not want to be anybody's advisor... I will not have any relationship with politicians,” the president said, adding “I am not going to talk about politics.”

“I am going to write, which does have to do with politics, but that has more to with academics,” he added.

Previously, the president said he would like to retire at a ranch that he inherited in the southern part of the country, where he would write books.

Lopez Obrador continues to have approval ratings of 60% four years into his term. Additionally, his party, Morena, is one of the most powerful parties in the country, holding 20 of Mexico’s 32 governorships.
