Newly elected Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum took office on Tuesday as the first female head of state in the Latin American country. She will serve one six year term for the period from 2024 to 2030.

The inauguration ceremony took place in the Chamber of Deputies, attended by almost 20 international leaders and hundreds of representatives of countries and multilateral organizations.

“Honorable Congress of the Union, people of Mexico, I swear to uphold and enforce the Political Constitution of the United Mexican States and the laws that emanate from it, and to loyally and patriotically carry out the position of president of the republic that the people have conferred on me,” Sheinbaum declared to the guests.

The outgoing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018-2024), handed the presidential sash to the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Ifigenia Martínez y Hernández, who placed the tricolor garment on Sheinbaum, the first woman to govern the country after more than 200 years of being a republic.

After the session in Congress, Sheinbaum went to the Mexican National Palace to eat with the invited leaders, among whom were the presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and of Chile, Gabriel Boric.

Also attending were personalities such as the First Lady Jill Biden, and Josep Borrell Fontelles, the Spanish High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.

Sheinbaum also received the baton of command from the indigenous peoples in the Zócalo of Mexico City, the largest public square in the country, where the president had her first massive event as head of state and gave a speech.
