Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador criticized NATO’s policy on the Russian invasion of Ukraine on Monday, calling it “immoral.”

The Mexican president did not specify the United States or NATO by name, but his remarks were the latest example of his socialist political party's contradictory position on the illegal invasion.

The story has been confirmed by ABC News and the Globe and Mail

Mexico has voted to condemn the invasion, but has declined to participate in sanctions against Russia.

López Obrador said Monday that U.S. and NATO policy was the same as saying “I’ll supply the weapons, and you supply the dead. It is immoral.”

“How easy it is to say, ‘Here, I’ll send you this much money for weapons,” he said. “Couldn't the war in Ukraine have been avoided? Of course it could.”

López Obrador’s comments could possibly be explained by a potential desire to keep relations open with the Kremlin.

Several Mexican legislators from López Obrador’s Morena party worked together to form a congressional Mexico-Russia Friendship Committee.

The Morena party also formed a youth group and sent an open letter to the Russian ambassador that purportedly showed support for the invasion.
