Mexican bolero star Luis Miguel has teamed up with Fundación Banorte to help families affected by Hurricane Otis, according to regional news reports.

Luis Miguel, known as 'El Sol de México' was previously criticized for not holding a charity concert to help those affected by Otis, a Category 5 hurricane that struck Guerrero on Oct. 25.

The storm was described as one of the most powerful hurricanes to ever strike Mexico’s Pacific Coastline.

But the Son of Mexico could not turn away from the popular resort town, which played an instrumental part in his blossoming career. He also used to be a nearby resident, owning a lavish mansion on Playa Bonfil before he sold it in 2013.

The Fundación Banorte announced Thursday morning that the world famous Bolero singer had made a generous donation of 10 million pesos and would double his contribution to rebuild homes in the Acapulco area.

Luis Miguel, originally from San Juan Puerto Rico, is known for having a close relationship with Acapulco, and is performing there on Dec. 27 as part of his tour

Foundation representatives expressed their gratitude to Luis Miguel on X, the platform previously known as Twitter by tweeting his handle, “LMXLM.”

“We are very pleased that @LMXLM has trusted Fundación Banorte to support the reconstruction of Acapulco! We will double it so that it is 20 million pesos,” tweeted Carlos Hank González, the President  of Grupo Financiero Banorte, Director of Gruma and General Director of Grupo Hermes.

Marcos Ramírez also tweeted to show his thanks to the Puerto Rican born singer turned Mexican star, and stressed the importance of Mexicans supporting one another through crises.

“Thank you so much, @LMXLM for your donation of 10 million pesos to Fundación Banorte for the reconstruction and housing equipment of the affected community in Acapulco. Fundación Banorte will double it to reach 20 million pesos. With your support, and that of thousands of Mexicans, we build strong families,” he wrote on X, the platform previously known as Twitter.

On Oct. 27, ADN America reported that Mexican President Manuel Andréas López Obrador had visited the area to raise the hopes of hurricane victims and assess damage.

The roads to Acapulco were so badly damaged that López Obrador had to disembark from his car and walk on muddy roads amid debris from landslides to reach affected areas.

The president mobilized 8,000 Mexican troops to help area residents. The storm’s death toll reached 48 as Oct. 30 with another 36 missing.
