Authorities in the Mexican state of Puebla are investigating the death of a baby whose body was found on January 11 in a garbage container at a prison in the municipality of San Miguel.

The six-day-old baby was stolen in Mexico City, reported the non-profit group Reinserta, which aims to lower crime in the country. No further details were disclosed, according to El Universal.

Saskia Niño de Rivera, president of Reinserta, claimed that the baby had an incision in his abdomen, which "leads us to believe that this child was used to bring drugs into the prison," reported Milenio.

Authorities think the baby was brought to the prison in an irregular manner since there is no record of it. In addition, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, minors are not allowed to enter, according to ministerial authorities.

After the incident became known, the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH) warned that it would initiate an investigation to look into the case. It also requested preventive measures to the Undersecretary of Penitentiary Centers of the state of Puebla and the Specialized Unit of the State Attorney General's Office for them to collaborate with the investigation.

The Human Rights Commission (CDH) of Puebla asked the CNDH on Tuesday not to intervene in the investigations of the baby. According to the CDH, it is the "relevant authorities that knows the facts that are the subject of the complaint." In response, the CNDH clarified that it did not take over the case.

The governor of Puebla, Miguel Barbosa, explained on Monday that authorities are investigating the facts.

"It is a very serious fact that is in the process of investigation, and I have been in permanent contact with the (state) Attorney General's Office to know the details," he said.

Barbosa confirmed that the baby underwent appendix surgery. He also emphasized that no further information can be revealed about the case.

In early 2021, the CNDH claimed that "celebrations" were organized in San Miguel prison with the authorization of the prison authorities, where drug cartels collected “quotas” and prostituted female inmates.

In December, there was a murder and a fight between inmates in the same prison, according to Reinserta.
