José Ramón López Beltrán, the eldest son of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, owns two houses north of Houston, Texas, worth close to one million dollars, according to an investigation by Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI) and Latinus.

José Ramón's lifestyle contrasts with the president’s austerity discourse. López Beltrán, 40, worked in his father's presidential campaign as Morena's coordinator in Estado de México. After the 2018 election, he said he did not know what he would do in the future.

After López Obrador's victory, José Ramón moved to a mansion in Conroe, Texas. The house was owned by a senior executive of Baker Hughes, one of the largest oil companies in the world with which the Mexican government has contracts for more than 151 million dollars, the investigation found.

Later, he moved to a newly constructed residence in Cypress. The property is registered under his wife’s name, Carolyn Adams, MCCI and Latinus added.

The Mexican president's son travels around the United States in a Mercedes Benz GLE-Class, purchased in Carolyn's name at a luxury car dealership in Conroe for $68,675.

Adams, 37, studied at the University of San Diego and has a background in oil and energy. For 15 years, she worked for British Petroleum, which allowed her to live in luxury, reported El Universal.

The Mexican president does not look favorably on his daughter-in-law's life of ostentation, claims El Universal, since it contrasts with the austerity discourse his government is promoting. This allegedly generated a rift between AMLO and his son José Ramón.

Carolyn Adams frequently published on social media about the luxurious life they lead. In 2021 she shared images of their vacation, and several users accused them of paying for that trip with money from the Mexican treasury.
