9 dead, more than a dozen injured in Andes mountains bus accident

About nine people died this Tuesday and another 13 were injured when a bus carrying 35 passengers overturned on a highway in the Andes mountains of Ecuador, according to the Quito Fire Department through its official channels.
The accident occurred on a curve on the winding road in the Andean province of Pichincha, whose capital is Quito between the towns of Pivo and Papallacta, which connects the Ecuadorian capital with the Amazon area of Ecuador.
According to local media, the accident occurred at 6:42 local time (11:42 GMT) in a unit of the Ciudad del Coca transport company, in the Amazonian province of Orellana.
Some of the injured received first aid medical assistance on the side of the road, at the point where the vehicle overturned.
“Once the search for the damaged vehicle was over, the number of deaths unfortunately increased to nine. Of the 26 people treated, 10 were transferred to health homes,” the Ecuadorian rescuers wrote in a new post hours later.
Some 33 personnel and 12 rescue vehicles worked at the scene. ‘Our team will remain on site until those affected are found in safe conditions,” reads a tweet from the Quito Fire Department.
