Latin Americans, U.S. nationals killed and kidnapped in Hamas terror attacks

As the death toll of U.S. nationals continues to grow, authorities have also reported the fatalities of other foreign nationals from around the world including Central and South America. Casualties and losses from the Latin American region include as many as 10 known nationals from Brazil, Mexico and Paraguay

Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed Thursday morning after arriving in Tel Aviv that at least 25 U.S. nationals have so far been killed as a result of the Hamas terror attacks on Israel, a campaign which started early Saturday morning.

So far, an estimated 1,200 Israelis and 1,200 Palestinians have been killed in the conflict.

As the death toll of U.S. nationals continues to grow, authorities have also reported the fatalities of other foreign nationals from around the world including Central and South America. Casualties and losses from the Latin American region include as many as 10 known nationals from Brazil, Mexico and Paraguay.

Latin America and Canada

From Brazil, the country's foreign ministry said on Sunday that three dual Brazilian-Israeli nationals went missing from the music festival that was being held near the border to the Gaza strip, and a fourth was being treated for wounds and injuries in the hospital.

The Paraguayan national media also reported that one couple were killed while government agencies report two of its nationals have gone missing.

In Mexico, Foreign Minister Alicia Barcena announced on Twitter that two of its citizens were taken hostage.

“I regret to inform that our [Mexican Embassy] has informed us that a Mexican woman and a Mexican man have been allegedly taken hostage by the Hamas group, in Gaza, this Saturday. We are in contact with authorities in Israel and family members to provide follow-up, support and care,” the Oct. 8 post reads.

North of the American border in Canada, Global Affairs Canada, a federal agency said it believes one Canadian has been killed and two others are missing. The agency said there are 1,419 known, registered Canadians in Israel, and 492 in the Palestinian territories of the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

The Canadian government has said that while registration is voluntary, it has traditionally asked its citizens to register with Global Affairs Canada for cases of emergency. 

Europe

In addition to there being victims from Latin America, there were a number of injured, missing and fatalities from Europe.

From Austria, its three Austrian-Israelis who were in southern Israel may have been kidnapped, according to the country’s foreign ministry.

From England, an official told the BBC that more than 10 British citizens are now believed to have been killed or have gone missing. One missing Brit, Nathaniel Young, who was serving in Israeli military was killed in service to the country.

Bernard Cowan, from Glasgow, was identified by family members on social media as having been killed, and two other British citizens, Dan Darlington and Jake Marlowe are confirmed missing.

Marlowe was working as a security officer at the music festival being held in the south of the country.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has offered Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu his country’s “steadfast support as Israel defends itself.”

From France, two French citizens were killed, and another 14 are missing, according to the French foreign ministry.

Two French citizens may be among the hostages taken by Hamas, according to a lawyer representing French nationals overseas, the BBC reported.

From Germany, a German-Israeli woman, Shani Louk, may have been taken from the Supernova festival.

“My daughter, Shani Nicole Luke, a German citizen, was kidnapped along with a group of tourists," said her mother, said her mother, Ricarda Louk, in a video she released.

She said she saw a video of her daughter “unconscious in a car” after being kidnapped. She held up a picture of her daughter on her phone and said he daughter  was “kidnapped with a group of tourists in southern Israel by Palestinian Hamas.”

“We were sent a video in which I could clearly see our daughter unconscious in the car with the Palestinians and them driving around the Gaza Strip," she said. "I ask you to send us any help or news. Thank you very much,” she added.

From Italy, an Italian couple who were part of the Kibbutz Be'eri are missing, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has said. Their family in Italy have not heard from them since the crisis began.

“We hope to find them but at the moment we have no more news. They have probably been taken hostage,” Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani told Italian television networks.

From Ireland, a 22-year-old Irish-Israeli woman, Kim Danti, is missing. Irish news agency, RTÉ, has reported the young woman was last seen at the Supernova festival.

Asia

Across the Pacific, the families of their loved ones are also in mourning and eagerly anticipating news about those who have gone missing.

From Cambodia, one student was killed, according to the country's Prime Minister, Hun Manet.

From the People’s Republic of China, a Beijing-born Chinese-Israeli woman, Noa Argamani, was reportedly kidnapped from the musical festival, according to the Israeli Embassy in China

The Israeli Embassy has published a video of the purported kidnapping.  

From the Philippines. two Filipinos were killed on Saturday when the attacks began, the Philippines government said. 

They were identified as a 42-year-old man and a 33-year-old killed during a kibbutz attack near the Gaza Strip border.

Three other Filipinos are also missing, but 26 were rescued by Israeli security forces, officials said. An estimated 30,000 Filipinos live in Israel, and 150 are in Gaza, according to the Philippine Star reported

From the mountainous Asian nation of Nepal, 10 of its nationals were killed, according to reports coming from the country’s government. Those 10 were students who volunteered to work with the Israeli farming sector.

An estimated 4,500 Nepalis work in the country as caregivers and an additional 265 Nepali students work in the agricultural sector.

From Thailand, 20 of its nationals were killed and another 14 Thai citizens were taken hostage, according to the country’s foreign ministry.

There are an estimated total of 30,000 Thai nationals who work in Israel’s agricultural sector. The government’s foreign ministry says a little more than 10% of them, a total of 3,226 Thais are asking to come home.

Africa

From Tanzania, two Tanzanian students who were studying in Israel for a business internship have gone missing, according to the East African country’s embassy in the country.

The nation’s ambassador to Israel, Alex Kallua said they have reached out and contacted about  350 Tanzanians who are still in the Middle Eastern country.
